Experimenting with digital photography
Photos representing my Marie Antoinette idea of concealing and revealing truths through history.
During my two years of studying photography I have experimented with different techniques and have discovered and been inspired by the work of different photographers. I have recently been researching the debate of manual Vs digital photography. I use an equal amount of digital and manual photography in my work so I can discover which technique is best for the idea I have for that time. While researching this debate I have discovered that both techniques are equally as good as each other, as “It's the artist, not the medium, which defines quality” Ken Rockwell. Personally I prefer manual photography as I find the processes more interesting. Above I have some examples of experimentation in the darkroom. The first picture is done using liquid emulsion; I painted the mixture onto a sepia coloured background to make the picture look more haunting. The picture is of a face which isn’t so clear to see, making it look ghostly. I was inspired by the work of Julia Margaret Cameron, especially her photographs of the angels, her work is very dreamlike and mysterious which suited my idea. I also experiment with manual photography out of the dark room, multiple exposure is one of my favourite techniques in photography, it is a very complicated technique and requires a lot of patients, this can also be done in the darkroom or on Photoshop but I prefer to do it on camera. Photography is a subject which I would like to take onto a more professional level and I can definitely see myself making a career out of this subject. Studying photography at university will allow me to develop my skills and will broaden my knowledge of the subject. I have recently been asked to photograph for a wedding which will give me experience of using photography out of the classroom.
